Indonesian Government Ratified Internet Law: Death to Bloggers' Voice?

Submitted by epeterson on 20 June, 2008 - 14:59.

On March 25, the Indonesian government ratified Undang-undang Informasi dan Transaksi Elektronic (ITE) which, in short, means Internet Law. The law regulates everything online under Indonesian government's territory effective April 1. Some highlights of the statute:

Article 10: government has the right to give Certificate of Credibility to Online Businesses
Article 11: Giving electronic signature a legal standing
Article 15-22 : regulate online transaction security
Article 25: protection for intellectual property
Article 26: regulates privacy
Article 27: Prohibit contents that is indecent, gambling related, defamation, extortion, and threat
Article 28: Prohibit contents that invokes hate based on lies, ethnic, religion, race, and affiliation.
Article 31: Prohibiting the transmission of content that is not one's own.
Article 45: Punishment for this statute ranges from 6 years to 12 years in prison or Rp 1 billion – Rp 12 billion and any additional charges.

The ratification of the Internet Law ignited uproar from Indonesian bloggers who feel that the Internet law, especially Article 27, 28, and 31, threatens freedom of expression guaranteed by the original 1945 constitution.

Previously, Indonesian government only loosely controlled the Internet. With the rise of cybercafes in cities, Internet usage in Indonesia has been increasing dramatically. In a country where the press is controlled tightly by various telecommunication laws [1,2,3], many Indonesian journalists had turned to the Internet to free their voices. How the Internet law will be implemented, and whether extensive filtering will be put in place, is unclear. The law itself seems to have come from a push from the Cyber Crime Direktorat Ekonomi Khusus Badan Reserse dan Kriminal (Bareskrim), the police cyber crime division for another cybercrime law . Under the new law, many critical journalism pieces could be challenged under articles 26, 27, 28, or 31 and thus would be unpublishable online as well as in print.

If used improperly, this new law will, again, silence Indonesian journalism.

A Celebration of Cultural Diversity

"T I D A K!"

If— by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too:
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same:
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss:
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!

ospek

soal OSPEK aka Hazing

cuma jadi ajang teriakin n ngerjain junior
nggak guna banget sih
walaupun sekarang udah diganti namanya jadi pembinaan2 apalah itu
sama aja intinya sih ngerjain
bilangnya sih persiapan untuk kuliah nanti
halah kuliah sih nggak sesulit itu deh
lagian kalo orang udah ada keinginan
misalnya untuk lulus kuliah, saya pikir
nggak dilatih "mental & fisik" apalah itu
juga nggak akan ngaruh!
saya ngga ngomongin stpdn ato ospek2 brutal spt itu
saya ngomong soal ospek yg
"ah ini ospek nggak ada apa2nya dibanding ..."
kenapa sih orang itu seneng kalo merasa bisa ngerjain orang yg lebih muda?
pastinya sih itu bukan salah satu tanda kedewasaan
it means you are not mature
kalo soal "kompak"
katanya, kalo diospek bisa jadi "kompak"
i think this is a myth
soalnya gw ngerasain sendiri
pas diospek aja kompak, kepaksa soalnya
udahnya pura2 kenal
soal "kalo ngga diospek mereka jadi kurang ajar"
yah namanya junior kurang ajar sih ada aja
kalopun udah diospek jadi nggak berani didepan seniornya
paling juga dibelakang ngejelek2in senior..
itu kan tergantung dari karakter masing2 orang
soal "pengen bales dendam" kata korban ospek
nah ini nih yg bikin ospek terus menerus dilakukan tiap taun
kalo semua junior yg udah jadi senior pengen bales dendam sih
masalahnya nggak akan beres2..
kalo mau stop ospek
kalo kata saya sih kita harus belajar memaafkan
kalo enggak apa bedanya sih kita sama senior2 itu?
kalo udah ngerasain ospek itu nggak enak,
makannya jangan dilakukan lagi ke orang lain..
that's what i did

setting gprs di linux

gw pake linux mint (baru nginstall nih!) tp dari kmaren ini emang udah nyobain connect internet pake hape.. tapi nggak berhasil.. eh kmaren ini pas cari2 lagi ketemu caranya yg lebih mudah
pertama, buka dulu terminal..
trus ketik:
lsusb

Bus 005 Device 003: ID 046d:c03d Logitech, Inc.
Bus 005 Device 004: ID 1004:6000 LG Electronics, Inc. VX4400/VX6000 Cellphone
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc.
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

disini ada :
Bus 005 Device 004: ID 1004:6000 LG Electronics, Inc. VX4400/VX6000 Cellphone

nah, ini kan hape yg mo dipake buat connect ke internet, inget2 device ID nya...
ID nya : 1004:6000
katanya 4 angka didepan itu vendor ID n yg dibelakangnya adlh product ID..

di terminal, ketik lagi:
sudo /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x(4nomor_depan) product=0x(4nomor_belakang)
misalnya, klo sya punya jadi
sudo /sbin/modprobe usbserial vendor=0x(1004) product=0x(6000)

trus ketik lagi :
wvdialconf create
ntar ada tulisan2 rame pokonya yg penting ada:
Found an USB modem on /dev/ttyACM0 (blablabla dimana gitu)

trus ketik:
sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
(gedit klo pake gnome, kate kalo pake kde, n kalo emang seneng pake terminal pake aja vi)

ntar ada file baru buat bikin konfigurasi modem..
nah disini isi file hapus semua, ganti pake ini:
[Dialer Defaults]
Modem = PUT MODEM LOCATION HERE(misal /dev/ttyACM0)
Baud = PUT MAX SPEED HERE (misal 57600 ato 115200)
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Init3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","centrin.net.id" (disini sy pake access point centrin)
ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = *99#
Username = username
Password = password
Stupid Mode = 1

save filenya..

tinggal connect sekarang..
ketik ini di terminal : wvdial
klo mo disconnect, pake Ctrl + C

note: klo mo lebih gampang lagi caranya pake aja GnomePPP ato KPPP ato dialer lainnya

kubuntu dolphin error

klo pake kubuntu dolphin(sejenis explorer di kubuntu) suka keluar error “cannot save bookmarks.xml” “harddisk full” dst..

cara memperbaikinya ketik ini di console:

sudo chown -R username:usergroup username

username-nya diganti pake username kamu n
usergroup-nya juga diganti pake group kamu
good luck!
